I yielded to the temptation… the Marantz SG-58 “Professional Audio Scope” (302 mm shotgun mic) was apparently introduced at $79, then slowly ratcheted down in price over time. Last week it briefly hit $13.44 (Amazon Prime shipping) and I “bit”. Hard to pass up at that price, even just out of curiosity. Shortly after I ordered the price bounced back up to $49.98.

So, I “lucked out” again. This joins an array of microphones and a couple of audio interfaces, and some accessories like booms and clips that I’ve acquired, all at bargain-basement prices, including a couple of (new, genuine) Shure SM58’s that I picked up for $44 each shipped. Basically I’ve been unboxing them, setting them up, testing them and playing around with them a bit, then putting them back in the boxes and putting them away with the vague idea of doing a podcast at some point. That will for sure have to be after the move, and after the dust settles in the new place, which I can’t even imagine yet.

The deals, good deals, on microphones started to pour in as soon as I had an interest. I fully understand that it sounds like silly superstition (at best) but it almost feels like I’m being encouraged in this direction. Hey, it’s my universe, I can believe any silly thing I want to.

I’ve got condensers and dynamics, but this is the first shotgun. Why a shotgun? The only excuse I can think of is doing video sometime and wanting the microphone out-of-frame.

Hmmm…
